Scoliosis Treatment Surgery in India

Scoliosis is a medical condition caused due to the abnormal curvature of the spinal cord. It occurs mostly during the growth period just before puberty. Most cases of scoliosis have no identifiable cause with a few symptoms.

The normal shape of the human spine has a curve at both its ends, one at the top of the shoulder and the other at the lower back. In scoliosis, the patient’s spine may be curved from side to side or may be in an “S” or “C” shape.

As most children are diagnosed with scoliosis between 8 years to 10 years, they may develop deformities which can get more severe as they grow older. The identified causes of scoliosis are:

  • Birth Defects
  • Neurological Abnormalities
  • Genetic Conditions

What are the symptoms of Scoliosis?

Scoliosis Symptoms in Kids: Some children with scoliosis don’t have any symptoms whereas others have some such as…

  • Different heights of shoulders
  • Head doesn’t look in the center with the rest of the body
  • One hip sticks out or is higher than the other
  • Ribs are pushed out
  • Arms don’t hang straight when a child stands
  • While bending, the two sides of the back are different

Scoliosis Symptoms in Adults: Some adults with scoliosis are those who have had this condition since childhood. With time, these curves can grow. Another form of scoliosis can also start during adulthood. In this, the discs that sit in the spinal canal get damaged due to wear and tear of bones and joints in the spine. As this continues, the discs start to lose height and tilt causing the spine to curve.

In adults, the first sign of scoliosis is back pain and as the pressure on the spine and nearby nerves increases, one starts to experience weakness and numbness.

Some symptoms of scoliosis are:

  • Trouble with walking
  • Trouble with standing straight
  • Uneven shoulders
  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Bump in the lower back region
  • Breathlessness
  • Bone spurs- bony projections that develop along the bone edges

What are the types of Scoliosis?

The different types of Scoliosis are:

  • Congenital Scoliosis: This is a type of scoliosis which a person is born with. Congenital Scoliosis occurs when the spine doesn’t fully develop in the womb.
  • Early Onset Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis occurs when a curve appears between the birth and age 10 or before puberty.
  • Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis occurs when the child is growing and a change in the shape of the spine takes place. This causes the spine to curve sideways and twist, both at the same time.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis occurs in adulthood. The two main reasons for this type of scoliosis are aging and weakness in the bones.
  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis: In this type of scoliosis, the curve in the spine is caused by a neurological or muscular condition.
  • Scheuermann’s Kyphosis: In this type of scoliosis, the front and back sections of the vertebrae grow at a different pace during childhood.
  • Syndromic Scoliosis: In this type of scoliosis, a sideways curve of the spine develops as a part of many syndromic diseases.

What are the Scoliosis Treatment options?

Scoliosis Treatment depends on the degree of curve of the spine. The two primary scoliosis treatment options are:

  • Bracing: If the curvature is more than 25 to 40 degrees, a person may need to use a brace if he is still in the growing stage. Braces are primarily used to prevent the curvature from increasing. Bracing is considered a better method of scoliosis treatment for cases that are detected early.
  • The effectiveness of the bracing depends on the number of hours the patient is willing to wear it. On average, braces should be worn for 16 to 23 hours a day to prevent the curve from growing.

Bracing mainly comes in two parts:

  • Underarm Brace: Underarm brace is made of plastic. It is fitted close to the body and isn’t visible. It fits around the lower part of the body to treat the lower spine curves.
  • Milwaukee Brace: This type of brace covers the entire torso except legs and arms starting from the neck region. It is used for areas not covered by the underarm brace.

Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis Surgery in India is recommended for people with a curvature of more than 40 degrees. Scoliosis Surgery can be considered an option if the curvature is affecting daily life activities and causing discomfort.

The most common type of scoliosis surgery in India is Spinal Fusion. In this type of scoliosis surgery, the doctor fuses the vertebrae using rods, bone graft, and screws. The bone graft is made of a material similar to the bone or bone itself. With the help of this scoliosis surgery, the bone graft and vertebrae fuse into a single bone.

What is Scoliosis Treatment Cost In India?

The Scoliosis Surgery Cost In India ranges between $11,000 to $13,000.
