Pituitary Gland is located at the base of the brain. The Pituitary gland is a part of Hypothalamus which controls the functioning of other glands in the body. Glands produce hormones and thus the production of hormones is controlled by the Pituitary gland. The tumour which is found in the Pituitary gland is mostly benign and does not spread to other organs of the body. This is a slow growing tumour but can cause compression on the pituitary gland or the surrounding brain tissue. If the tumour is affecting that part of the pituitary gland which produces hormones then the symptoms would be different from the pituitary tumour which affects non-hormone producing part of the pituitary gland.
Presence of Pituitary Tumour can either reduce the production of hormones or increase its production. Both the situations are not good for the patient and can present in the form of myriad of symptoms. Common symtpoms of Pituitary tumour are headache, vision loss, nausea, vomiting, feeling cold, altered menstrual cycle, sexual dysfunction, unexplained weight loss or gain.
If you experience any of the above symtpoms then you should see a neurosurgeon at the earliest. Our neurosurgeon will do a thorough physical and neurological examination. This would be followed by MRI Scan of the Brain. MRI Brain is the gold standard investigation for any kind of brain tumour including pituitary tumour. The blood tests for hormonal levels also give a good indication of some kind of problem in the Pituitary Gland.
The best treatment for Pituitary tumour is removal through surgery. The surgery can be done either through the nose, if the tumour is not very big. If the tumour is big and complicated then removal of the tumour through craniotomy is required. The surgical results depend on the experience of the neurosurgeon and the complexity of the tumour, its size and location.
In some cases of small pituitary tumours, radiation therapy in the form of Gamma Knife, IGRT, IMRT etc can be used to burn the tumour without surgery.
